What is the Agri-Business Leadership Program? The objective of the Michigan Agri-Business Leadership Program, a four-session program taking place during the course of a year, is to identify emerging leaders in Michigan’s agribusiness industry and provide them with a unique opportunity for personal growth and professional development. The program is designed to offer information, hands-on training and ground level experiences in several critical areas regarding policy, legislation and regulatory matters.

Participants will learn the “nuts and bolts” of the opportunities and challenges facing our industry, and what we need to do to continue moving forward, both politically and economically. They will also discuss issues and brief policy leaders on our industry’s perspective on these critical issues. Most important, they will learn more about how their experiences in Michigan Agriculture can be leveraged to make a difference in Lansing and Washington.

To learn more about the activities of the group, you can review some news stories from recent classes:

Who should apply? The program is well-suited for anyone desiring to broaden their skills and expertise and is interested in helping MABA advance Michigan agriculture in the years ahead. The class typically contains a mix of early- to mid-career professionals. Participants often bring strong skills in their respective fields, but many bring limited exposure to policy, advocacy and politics. The Leadership Program provides experiences in these areas.

Who leads the program? The program is led by MABA President Chuck Lippstreu and MABA staff, with the participation of a wide range of community and industry leaders. Participants can expect to meet with trade association leaders, private and NGO sector executives, and policymakers ranging from local government officials to Members of Congress and other senior federal leaders.

What is the program schedule? Each year, we host four sessions:

  • West Michigan (2 days)
  • Lansing (2 days)
  • Detroit (2 days)
  • Washington, DC (4 days)

The specific locations and program agendas change from year-to-year, but all encapsulate key skills and knowledge areas critical to our work:

  • Understanding the Broader Agricultural Industry
  • Media Issues and Communications
  • How Legislative Issues Work
  • The Role of Trade Associations and Lobbyists
  • Interacting with Policy Leaders
  • Media Training
  • Campaigns, Elections and How they Affect Agriculture
  • Understanding MABA’s National Affiliate Organizations
  • How to Advocate Before the Federal Government
  • And more!

Is there a cost? To help offset some program expenses, participants are asked to pay a $3,000 participation fee. Notably, this fee covers all flight, hotel and meal expenses during the course of the program.

Where do I go with questions? If you have questions about the program, please contact Kara or Chuck at the MABA office.
