MABA June 2023 Update

Key activities for MABA during the past month included supporting the MABA Educational Trust with its cornerstone fundraising event and scholarship distribution; attending events around the state; and continuing the planning process for our fall and winter meeting season. The first major fall event is coming our way September 14-16 at the MABA Outlook Conference, and you can learn more about that here.

Educational Trust hosts Scholarship Golf Outing

More than 150 golfers joined us at the PohlCat Golf Course in Mt. Pleasant, MI for the Scholarship Golf Outing – the first big golf outing of the year to raise funds for the MABA Educational Trust. We appreciated all those who were once again part of this special event.

More than 20 scholarships announced

At the end of June, the Educational Trustees met to evaluate scholarship applications for the Fall 2023 semester. A list of scholarships awarded to young people entering the agricultural industry can be found here, with a total of 21 college students receiving support from the Educational Trust! “The Michigan Agri-Business Association is proud to support the next generation of industry leaders. This support is made possibly by participation of many across Michigan’s agricultural sector,” said MABA Educational Trust Chair, Ward Forquer.

MABA joins Michigan Millers Association for legislative update

MABA President Chuck Lippstreu met with leaders of the Michigan Millers Association (MMA) at the organization’s annual meeting, to provide an update on key legislative issues in Michigan. We discussed the makeup of the new session of the Michigan Legislature, along with agricultural issues being taken up by lawmakers or discussed by stakeholders in Lansing. We are always happy to meet with MABA members and allied organizations to discuss legislative and other policy issues facing the industry. Contact any member of the MABA staff if we can assist.

Michigan Pork hosts Lansing Ag Club breakfast

Leaders of the Michigan Pork Producers Association and National Pork Producers Council, along with members of the MPPA Board of Directors, were on hand in Lansing to host the June Lansing Ag Club breakfast. MPPA and NPPC staff provided an overall update of the state of the pork industry and answered questions. We continue to appreciate the engagement of leaders in Lansing at this breakfast!

MDARD Director Tim Boring and MABA President Chuck Lippstreu highlighted Michigan agriculture’s international reach at a U.S. Global Leadership Coalition event in Detroit. The conversation was part of a series of eventsin Michigan and Iowa, highlighting the importance of federal investment in trade promotion and strategic international engagement. The Heartland Summit was headlined by bipartisan Congressional leaders, including U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst from Iowa and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell from Michigan. Learn more about USGLC here

MABA Intern Tilly Graham had an opportunity last month to visit Eastern Market in Detroit. We appreciate Eastern Market’s Dan Carmody for providing a tour and update for the MABA staff, and for Eastern Market Corporation’s longstanding support for MABA!
